Learning to Live with Alport Syndrome
Alport Syndrome is one of the health complications that are currently giving many people sleepless nights. This health disorder is usually hereditary and is mostly passed from a parent to the baby. Most people who suffer from Alport Syndrome tend to have problems with their kidneys, eyesight and ears. Alport Syndrome occurs as a result of mutations that take place in one of the three genes which usually encode for Type 4 Collagen. Type 4 Collagen is a protein that acts as a barrier between different tissue compartments.
There is no treatment method for patients who are suffering from Alport Syndrome. This can be very stressful and annoying especially in patients who have to deal with Kidney Problems, loss of eyesight and loss of hearing capabilities. However, there are quite a number of methods that you can use in handling the symptoms that come with having Alport Syndrome. Below are some of the things you can do to reduce the symptoms of this tormenting health condition.
- Exercise and Diet
Regular exercises and the correct diet is one of the most common methods that you can use in treating any type of health complication. Patients with Alport Syndrome will have to do a lot of exercises that will make their kidneys better off. Furthermore, they will avoid heart attacks since their cholesterol levels and blood pressure is in check. When it comes to diet, most doctors will advice taking food that is low in salt and protein. Having this in your diet will increase the blood pressure hence increasing chances of getting heart attacks.
- Kidney Transplant
Most people can live with one kidney since it will still operate without causing any complications whatsoever. If you happen to develop kidney failure after getting Alport Syndrome then a kidney transplant is the only way out. However, you will need regular tests which will determine whether the remaining kidney is fully operational. You will also be given some medications that will suppress your immune system forever.
- Hearing Aids
Alport Syndrome can sometimes lead to the loss of your hearing senses. If this is the case, then you will have to make do with hearing aids that increase your hearing ability. Failure to this, you may end up losing your sense of hearing. The good news is that not many patients will lose their sense of hearing because of having Alport Syndrome. However, you must consult a doctor if you detect ringing sounds in your ears as it will in the end cause loss of your hearing senses.
Alport Syndrome is just like any other health complication that can affect a person regardless of age or race. It is for this reason that we should treat patients with care and love. By doing so, they end up gaining the courage that is needed to survive this stressful ordeal. Patients should also ensure that they follow a doctor’s advice if they are to live a longer and happy life.
